Liana Friedenbach, 16, and Felipe Caffé, 19, met in 2003 in a traditional, private school in Sao Paulo. She comes from a wealthy, respected jewish family, active in the jewish community. A young, pretty girl, on her way to finishing high school, with tons of friends and love. He comes from a simple, humble family, which wouldn’t normally have the means to put their son through such an expensive high school. But he was a good student, respectful, dedicated, characteristics which granted him a scholarship on this high class school, where he met Liana, where they fell in love, where they started exchanging little notes filled with little hearts.
Their blossoming relationship was known and approved by both their families. In what seemed to be a natural desire to be alone together, with more intimacy and time, the couple decided to go away for the weekend on a camping trip. In order to escape their parents’ watchful eyes, Felipe told his family he would be camping with some friends, in a place he had already gone once before – what they didn’t know was that he was going with Liana. Liana told her family she was going on a weekend trip with some friends from the jewish community to Ilhabela, an island on the coast of Sao Paulo famous for its beauty and nightlife.
And there they went. On a Friday night, october 31st 2003, they spent the night together in Sao Paulo, and caught an early bus to Embu-Guaçu, close to the spot where they chose to set camp. Their tent was barely up and already they were seen by a local 16 year old boy only known as “Champinha”, a poor boy, violent and used to violence – he was around by chance, hunting in the wooded area with a guy known as “Pernambuco”. Pernambuco worked as a caretaker and already had trouble with the law, as had Champinha. As soon as Champinha saw Liana, he said to Pernambuco that the girl was “hot”, and with that, the attack began.
They approached the teenage couple armed and took them to a run down house which was owned by another local man, called Reginaldo. On their way there, Liana pleaded for them not to hurt her and her boyfriend, saying she had money and that her family would give them anything for their safe return. The terrified couple soon realised what was the kidnappers’ intentions, or better, Champinha’s intentions, since he was the mentor of the crime from the start. Liana was repeatedly raped by Champinha, Pernambuco and Reginaldo. Some of these awful rape sessions were witnessed by Felipe who, according to the kidnappers, “lost his voice from so much screaming and crying”. On that Sunday morning, after a whole day of fear and torture, the couple was taken to the nearby woods where Felipe was executed with a single shot on the back of the head. Liana didn’t watch her boyfriend die, but heard the shot and immediately entered an absolute state of shock. She wouldn’t say anything else anymore, or even react to her abuse, she would just cry and cry. And like that, she was taken back to that awful little house to resume her sessions of torture and sexual abuse.
On that same Sunday the couple’s parents realised something was terribly wrong – they hadn’t heard from their children. A few phonecalls later, they put the lie their kids told them together and a huge police search began for the two teenagers, organized by Liana’s father, a lawyer called Ari Friedenbach. It wasn’t hard to figure out where they might be, since Felipe had already gone camping on the same area before. The repercussion began, and the kidnappers started feeling uneasy. It is known that Champinha’s brother went to the place they were to warn him that his mother wanted him home because of all the police in the area. Champinha told his brother he was there with his girlfriend, and that he still had to see her to her bus back home. On Wednesday, novermber 5th, after five days of their kidnapping, Liana was taken to that same wooded area where her boyfriend’s body laid. There, Champinha commited the final act, and Liana was murdered by stabbing and blunt force trauma to her head. Her body was found a few days later, along with Felipe’s, to the horror of their parents and of an entire country.

Ele veio de uma família mais humilde, que normalmente não teria condições de pagar para o filho um colégio tão caro. Mas ele era bom aluno, estudioso, ganhou uma bolsa e passou a estudar nesse lugar de alto nível, onde conheceu Liana, com quem começou a namorar e a trocar bilhetinhos cheios de coração.
O namoro era conhecido e, ao que parece, aprovado por ambas as famílias. Numa aparente ânsia de estarem sozinhos, com mais intimidade e por mais tempo, resolveram passar um fim de semana acampando, só os dois. Para burlar o olhar cuidadoso da família, Felipe disse aos pais que iria acampar com uns amigos, num local onde ele já havia acampado anteriormente – o que nao sabiam é que seria somente com Liana. Já Liana, disse aos pais que iria viajar com algumas amigas da comunidade judaica para Ilhabela – uma ilha do litoral paulista cheia de jovens e diversão.
E lá se foram os dois. Passaram a noite da sexta feira, 31 de outubro de 2003, perambulando pela Avenida Paulista, e sábado cedo tomaram o ônibus para a região de Embu-Guaçu, local onde pretendiam acampar pelo fim de semana. Mal montaram a barraca já foram avistados por um garoto de 16 anos, morador da região, pobre, acostumado com violência. Conhecido nas redondezas como “Champinha”, estava ali por acaso, caçando tatus com o “Pernambuco”, um caseiro da região com várias passagens pela polícia. Ao avistar Liana, Champinha comentou ao companheiro que aquela menina era “muito gostosa”, e com isso e não muito mais, os dois partiram para o ataque.
Renderam os dois adolescentes e os levaram para um sítio praticamente abandonado ali perto, que estava sob os cuidados de um outro colega deles, Reginaldo. No caminho, Liana disse que tinha dinheiro, que eles não os machucassem. O casal apavorado foi levado a um casebre, e lá perceberam as reais intenções de Champinha, o líder e mentor do crime. Liana foi repetidamente violentada por Champinha, Pernambuco e Reginaldo. Algumas dessas sessões de estupro foram presenciadas por seu namorado, Felipe, que segundo os criminosos “perdeu a voz de tanto chorar e gritar”. No domingo pela manhã, após um dia inteiro de todo o tipo de tortura, os dois foram levados a um matagal onde Felipe foi executado com um tiro na nuca. Liana não assistiu à morte do namorado, mas ouviu o tiro e a partir de então entrou em estado de choque. Não falava mais, não reagia, só chorava. E assim foi levada de volta ao cativeiro, de volta às sessões de abuso e violência.
No domingo mesmo os pais do casal começaram a desconfiar de que algo estava errado. Não tinham notícia dos filhos. Alguns telefonemas depois, acabaram descobrindo a mentira contada pelos filhos e uma busca frenética iniciou-se, organizada pelo pai de Liana, o advogado Ari Friedenbach. Não foi difícil concluir em que região estariam, já que Felipe já havia acampado naquele mesmo lugar anteriormente. A repercussão começou, e os criminosos ficaram preocupados. Um irmão de Champinha foi avisá-lo que sua mãe queria que ele voltasse para casa, pois estava preocupada com a quantidade de policiais na região. Champinha disse ao irmão que Liana era sua namorada, e que tinha de acompanhá-la de volta à rodoviária. Na quarta feira dia 5 de novembro, após cinco dias de cativeiro, Champinha pessoalmente levou Liana a uma região erma muito próxima de onde jazia o corpo de seu namorado. Lá, cometeu o ato final, assassinando Liana com facadas e porretadas na cabeça. Seu corpo foi encontrado dias depois, assim como o de Felipe, para o desespero de seus pais, e para o terror de uma nação.
